What you'll need:

  • Aluminum can (soup can works well)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Glue
  • Clothespin (spring type)
  • Craft eyes or bottle caps
  • Black permanent marker

How to make it:

  1. Wash out an aluminum can.
  2. Your child can paint it with an adult's help. (Make sure your child is painting in a well-ventilated place.)
  3. To make the bird's face and message keeper, glue on a spring-type clothespin for a beak.
  4. Use two adhesive craft eyes or glue on bottle caps for eyes.
  5. With a black permanent marker, draw eyeballs inside the lids and any other facial features your child wishes.
  6. Clamp on a special note written by the child (a younger child can draw a picture or just sign his name).
