What you'll need:

  • 1 denim pant leg, average size adult
  • Hot glue gun
  • 4 buttons
  • 18” tan jewelry cord
  • Alphabet beads to spell out “Jesus Loves Me”
  • 2 heart beads
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  1. Lay the denim pant leg on the table and place the Bible on top of it, lining up the book with the seams of the pants. (See image.)
  2. Trim the length of the pant leg so that there is enough denim to cover the bible and have about 3" extra on each side.
  3. Keeping the bible positioned on the pant leg, lay the left side of the pant leg on the work surface and cut an opening about 1” from the edge of the binding. This is the opening you will slide the front book cover into. Repeat on the other side of the pant leg. (See photos: 1, 2, 3)
  4. Insert the front and back covers into the denim openings that you just cut.
  5. At each end of the pant leg, cut about 1.5” in and remove, just from the side of the denim that is facing up, leave the back side untouched. (See image.)
  6. Fold the untouched side of the denim around the book cover like wrapping a present. Use hot glue to adhere denim to denim, do not glue to the book itself. Repeat on the other side. You have just created the two cover inserts. (See image.)
  7. Remove the book from the cover and touch up any frayed edges with the hot glue gun. (See image.)
  8. Put the Bible back inside the cover and place face up on the work surface.
  9. Cut the jewelry cord into two pieces, one 6” long and the other 12” long.
  10. Thread alphabet beads onto the 6” cord to spell Jesus.
  11. On each end, thread a button on and tie off in the back.
  12. Repeat this process with the 12” cord and spell the words “Loves Me” with 2 heart beads in between the words.
  13. On each end, thread a button on and tie off in the back.
  14. Trim the ends of both of these beaded cords to about ½”.
  15. Use hot glue to attach the beaded cords on to the front of the cover and let dry.
  16. Remove the Bible from the cover and use a needle and thread to tack the buttons onto the denim cover from the back.
  17. Replace Bible in cover.

Tips:

  • To add a handle, simply use more denim rolled and glued to hide seams and glue inside the cover. You may want to tack this in with needle and thread or permanent fabric glue.
  • Be careful with hot glue, parental supervision is always recommended when using a hot glue gun.
  • Looks for alphabet beads in craft supply and discount department stores.
  • This cover can be adapted for any type of book. Beads can spell out the child's name, or their favorite words or phrases.
