What you'll need:

  • 1 sheet light blue felt
  • 2 sheets green felt
  • 5 or 6 cotton balls
  • White craft glue
  • Gallon plastic milk jug
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Potting soil
  • Small rocks
  • Seeds
  • Pattern 1
  • Pattern 2

How to make it:

  1. Cut blue felt into 1" x ½" strips. Set aside. Cut continents from green felt using pattern 1 and 2. (See photo.)
  2. Have an adult use scissors or a craft knife to cut the top of the jug off. Make sure not to cut off the handle.
  3. Glue the continents onto the jug. You do not have to be precise, let children glue them wherever they please. (See photo.)
  4. Use the blue strips of felt to cover the remaining areas of the plastic jug.  (See photo.)
  5. Pipe some white craft glue onto the jug over the different land masses to create the clouds. Pull cotton balls apart and spread out onto the glue. (See photo.)
  6. Have an adult turn jug upside down and poke several holes into the bottom for drainage. (See photo.)
  7. Turn right side up, add a couple handfuls of small rocks to the bottom, then fill with potting soil. Plant seeds as instructed on package.

Tips:

  1. Your jug will not hold up in foul weather. Be sure to bring inside or place under a shelter if it is raining.
  2. Save the top of the milk jug to make a fun bouquet holder.
  3. Don't throw away left over felt scraps, save them for another project.
