Beautiful bejeweled cross

By: Amanda Formaro

Difficulty: Very Easy

Average User Rating:

This lovely cross will make a wonderful Sunday school craft project. All that is needed is some cardboard, white paint or Gesso and a handful of colorful craft jewels.

What you'll need:

  • Cardboard or heavy cardstock/poster board
  • Liquitex Basics Gesso or white acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Acrylic sealer spray, glossv
  • Various colorful craft jewels
  • White craft glue (Tacky glue)
  • 12" sheer white ribbon

How to make it:

  1. A grown up should cut a cross out from the cardboard. This is most easily done with a box cutter. Poke a hole in the top of the cross with a pen or using a hole punch, leaving about one-half inch at the top. Cross can be whatever size you like, ours is approximately 10-inches high and six-inches wide.
  2. Paint the cross white with Gesso or acrylic paint. Paint another coat if needed.
  1. When paint is dry, spray the cross with acrylic gloss sealer to give it a shiny finish. Allow it to dry completely. This step can be skipped in the interest of time.
  2. Before gluing, place your jewels onto your cross to get a feel for how you want it to look.
  3. When you are happy with the result, glue the jewels in place. Older children may enjoy adding tiny jewels on as well to accent the larger ones.
  4. When the glue is completely dry, thread the ribbon through the hole in the top of the cross. Tie the ribbon into a bow at the top.

Tips:

  • Craft jewels can be purchased in large bags with a big assortment of colors and shapes at most craft and discount department stores.
  • If this will be used for a Sunday school project and time is of the essence, cut out the crosses ahead of time. You may even wish to paint them first, especially if children will be wearing their “Sunday best.”
  • This is a very easy craft for young children. We recommend sorting out the craft jewels before giving them to the kids. Hand out sandwich bags with an assortment of large craft jewels. Removing the smaller jewels will eliminate the possibility of them getting lost, or worse yet, swallowed!
