Felt Masks

I have just completed a very successful class project that I thought others might enjoy. My class was doing plays of children's nursery rhymes, and I thought the plays would really come to life if the children made and wore masks to represent their characters. Making the mask was fun, although at times a little messy.

What you'll need:

  • 1 piece of 8 1/2" x 11" felt, cut in a circle with eye and mouth holes
  • 1/2 cup white glue
  • Felt scraps, feathers, sequins, pipe cleaners, glitter, yarn, and other decorative tidbits
  • A coffee can (3-5# size)
  • Plastic wrap
  • 1 inch paint brush

How to make it:

  1. After cutting out circle from felt and cutting eye and mouth holes, lay the felt piece over a coffee can that has been covered with plastic wrap.
  2. Using the one inch paint brush, brush on approximately 1/2 cup of white glue.
  3. Now decorate the mask however you like - Some of my students favorite ideas were using yarn for hair, feathers for eyebrows and mustaches, sprinkling with glitter and adding sequins, putting ribbons on yarn as hair bows, cotton balls for lambs wool, and making glasses from metallic pipe cleaners.
  4. Allow mask to dry for 24 - 48 hours.
  5. Once mask is completely dry remove it from the coffee can and use a hole punch to make a hole on the center of each side. Then tie a piece of yarn, ribbon, or string to each side so they can be tied in the back, around a child head.

Hope others enjoy this project as much as my students did!
