Kids can dress up for Halloween as their favorite candy treat with this M&M costume.
What you'll need:
- M&M package (yes, you may eat the candy)
- Drapey gold fabric (amount depends on size of person, see tips below)
- Brown broadcloth fabric
- Scissors
- Permanent brown marker
- Wonder-Under paperback fusible lining
- Pattern for lettering (computer fonts, stencils, or freehand)
- Pen or fabric marking pen or pencil
- Iron
- Sewing machine and matching thread
- Stick
How to make it:
- Measure from shoulders to about an inch and a half off the floor to obtain length of drapey, gold material needed. Don't forget to add for seam allowances.
- Cut the fabric to size.
- Stitch the material front to back, leaving arm and neck holes. All openings were turned under and hemmed on the machine for a finished appearance.
- Trace the letters "M", "&", and "M" on the Wonder-Under paper side.
- Cut the Wonder-Under close to the letters.
- Using the iron, and following the manufacturer's instructions, adhere the Wonder-Under to the broadcloth fabric. Let cool.
- Cut the letters out of the broadcloth that is adhered to the Wonder-Under.
- Peel off the paper.
- Place the letters on the gold fabric where desired.
- Using the iron, and following the manufacturer's instructions, adhere the letters to the gold fabric, making sure not to scorch the gold fabric. Let cool.
- Use the permanent brown marker to copy the writing on the M&M package.
Tips:
From a Kaboose reader: "I freehanded everything to size based on the size of the garment and looking at one of those small M&M packages. You can't see it in the photo but the costume is identical to the package complete with net weight and everything. I used a permanent brown marker to do the writing.
Everything is Wonder-Undered, no applique. I completed the costume in an afternoon (but that's when I had only one child afoot)."
