Paper Plate Mask

Bring out the creative impulse in young crafters (and would-be actors) with this paper plate mask. The instructions describe how to make a panda mask, but you can also create your own animals.
What you'll need:
- Paper plate with 3 sections
- Black construction paper
- White construction paper
- Bright colored construction paper
- Black crayon
- Stapler
- Yarn, optional to use for face mask
- Tacky glue
- Scissors
How to make it:
- Look at the picture to see how the mask is oriented. The two small food areas are the two eye spots, with the large area being the nose/mouth area.
- Color the black eye spots or cut black ovals out of construction paper and glue them on. If you are not making a mask, also cut out smaller white ovals for the eyes and glue them onto the black ones.
- Do this step only if you are making a mask - this can also be a wall hanging. Put the plate over your face like a mask. Ask a grownup to use a pencil to lightly mark where your eyes are under the plate. Ask the grownup to cut out the eyes so that you will be able to see from behind the finished mask.
- Cut out or draw a black oval for the nose, and draw the mouth with a black crayon.
- Cut ear shapes out of black construction paper, tuck them behind the edge of the plate and staple them on. Grownups can do this for little kids.
- Cut out a big bow and attach it to the bottom of the plate with a stapler. Here's a bow pattern if you need one.
- If you're making a mask, use the hole punch to make a hole on either side of the mask. Cut two pieces of yarn (about six inches long apiece). Tie one piece in each hole to make a strap to hold the mask.
Tips:
This project can either be a creative art project - where each child designs their own animal, or it can be a cutting project for younger children, where the necessary shapes - circles, triangles and ears are marked on construction paper for them to cut.
