Personalized Food Tin Calendar
Difficulty: Average
Parental supervision is recommended
Get organized this year with this easy-to-make New Year’s calendar craft, which uses magnetic tape, an old calendar and a square food tin. Personalize the calendar by making special markers for birthdays, doctor appointments, Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and other holidays or occasions. This is also a good calendar to make in preparation for back to school.
What you'll need:
- Food tin, eight-inch square or larger
- [Blank calendar grid] that can be printed
- Discarded calendar
- Sticky-back magnetic tape
- Scissors
- Colored paper
- Colored pens or markers
- Variety of collage box materials such as trims, felt, fabric and craft foam scraps, sequins and craft jewels
How to make it:
- [Print] or draw a blank calendar grid that will fit on the lid of the food tin.
- Cut the numbers one to 31 from the old calendar.
- Back each number with sticky-back magnet tape and trim the edges to make them uniform.
- Place the calendar grid on the lid of the tin. Place the numbers in the correct squares for the month. The numbers will secure the paper to the lid.
- Cut the letters for each month of the year from the old calendar.
- Back the letters with sticky-back magnet.
- Stick the letters for the correct month on the lid of the tin above or next to the calendar grid.
- Use the collage materials to create small symbols to stick on holidays and special days each month.
- Back each symbol with a piece of sticky-back magnet.
Tips:
- Personalize your calendar. Get creative with special day markers. For New Year’s Day, cut the tip off an old party hat and--ta-da!--you have a tiny party hat. For Martin Luther King Day, cut a dove from white felt. You can remember Mom’s birthday with a cake marker made out of felt or paper. And while you’re at it, mark your next school test day with an A+ for good luck.
- Safe keeping. So you don’t lose them, store any pieces you’re not using inside the tin.
