Recycled Candles

Difficulty: Average

Parental supervision is recommended

Have your family collect all the remaining wax in old jar candles and give the candles a new life with this recycling craft--perfect for any occasion.

What you'll need:

  • Wicks
  • Old candles
  • Glass jars (preferably with lids)
  • Wax boil bags
  • Ribbon
  • Craft glue

How to make it:

  1. Many craft stores and some major department stores sell candle making supplies. Pick up some wicks and some boil bags to melt the wax. Most households use some kind of glass jar, and these generally have lids. There are many shapes and sizes of jars. Use a knife (not for kids!) to remove the old wax from the candle jars and set them aside to clean and refill.
  2. Fill the boil bags with different types of wax. Since many candles are scented, you may want to match the scents to make larger candles from the various scraps. You can end up with many different flavors, such as "vanilla-berry" and "spice". In a large pot, boil the water while preparing the jars.
  3. The hard part of this project is getting the wicks to stand up straight while you pour the wax. If the wick is not straight the candle will not burn well, so try tying it to the top of the jar with twist ties. The twist ties work by crossing them over in the middle in an "X" shape with
    the wick in the center.
  4. After melting the wax, pour the candles into the various jars and decorate the outside of the jars with ribbons and glue.
  5. While a glue gun was not tried, craft or "tacky" glue is recommended. The jars get warm when the candles burn, and the glue will melt if heated!
