The diploma scroll is an important symbol of graduation. Make your own personalized card, featuring ribbons in school colors, to say congratulations to your favorite grad.

What you'll need:

  • One piece of colored cardstock, 7" x 8.5"
  • One small piece of colored cardstock, about 2" x 2"
  • One small piece of scrap white cardstock, about 1" x 2"
  • Marker or stamp and ink pad
  • Adhesive such as glue stick, glue or scrapbook mounting squares
  • Glue dots
  • One piece of 1/4" wooden dowelling, slightly less than 2" long (a short pencil or something similar would work too)
  • One strip of white paper, about 2" wide and 4" long
  • Tape
  • About 3-4" of thin ribbon in school colors
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  1. Fold the large piece of cardstock in half lengthwise. This is your card.
  2. Glue the small square of cardstock to the front, about 1.5" from the top. Stamp, write or print the word "Congrats" on the scrap piece of white cardstock. Tear the edges of the "Congrats" cardstock and glue it just below the colored square. (See photo.)
  3. Take the strip of white paper and tape one end of it to the piece of wooden dowel. (See photo.) Roll the strip of paper around the dowel to form a diploma scroll. Glue it closed with a glue dot. Tie the ribbon(s) around the scroll in a double knot. Trim the ends if necessary. (See photo.) Use two or three glue dots to glue the scroll to the colored square. (See photo.)
  4. Write a note of congratulations on the inside of the card!

Tips:

  • This card fits into a business-size envelope. If you're going to send it through the mail, use a padded envelope. Check at the post office to see if it requires extra postage.
  • If the card is for a university, college, or trade school graduation, you could personalize the scroll even more based on the program: a piece of fabric for fashion design, graph paper for science, math or accounting, newspaper for journalism, map for geography, blueprint for architecture, binary code for computer science, sales receipt or stock market page for commerce and business, etc.
  • Glue dots are available at craft stores. They are extra-sticky and work well to hold slightly bulkier or heavier embellishments like the diploma scroll.
  • Roll the scroll on a bit of an angle so the edge is slightly uneven. This makes it look like a scroll rather than a tube of paper.
