Shaped bulletin boards

Difficulty: Easy

Parental supervision is recommended

Craft a gift fitting for any occasion with shaped bulletin boards. Kids will have fun coming up with creative shapes to cut out of the cork ceiling tile that forms the basis of this craft.

What you'll need:

  • Cork type ceiling tile [purchased in 2'x4' sheets]
  • Fabric, 3" larger than finished size of project
  • Glue, both spray adhesive and bottled white type of choice
  • Staples
  • Serrated or razor knife
  • Scissors
  • Imagination
  • Optional: Ribbon, flowers, raffia, bows, etc. for finishing touches.

How to make it:

  1. Draw desired shape on board and cut out with knife of choice. Ceramic saw or serrated knife with larger teeth works well. Note: The more intricate shape you choose = more curves, time and patience to cover with the fabric to make a smooth edge.
  2. Spray board with spray adhesive and place face down on wrong side of fabric.
  3. Clip or notch fabric where necessary as you pull to back side to make a neat, flat edge, before gluing and/or stapling. [I use an electric stapler with 3/8" to 1/2" staples, no glue.]
  4. Trim with desired options. You can add a hanger or nail directly to wall with small finishing nails.

Tips:

Use broken or used tiles whenever possible.

When I taught this craft the store had some neat novelty prints that I used for the theme of the shape. One was balloons, so the shape was a hot air balloon with a small basket attached with ribbon that held pencils & pens. Another had tea cups so I made a tea pot. Originally, I matched wallpaper that had hearts on it. This also works well for Southwest interiors by cutting out a Joshua tree, cactus, or a pueblo if you really want to be creative with fabric and paint. Usually, the simpler the shape, the more impressive. You can match kitchen curtains, plastic bag holder, or scissors holder - whoops another craft!

Scissors Holders are made from toilet paper tubes covered with fabric or paper or !?! Ribbon or string attached to the top through holes on each side makes a nice handle to hang the holder from. Just make the strings long enough to get the scissors in and out of easily. Enjoy!
