Wool Snowflake Card

It looks freshly fallen snow landed on top of this card! This wooly snowflake will certainly make your Christmas card one-of-a-kind.

What you'll need:

  • Design cardstock
  • Two types of solid-colored cardstock
  • White cardstock
  • 18 gage wire
  • Pearl beads (recommended: small, medium and large sizes)
  • Wool
  • Wire cutters
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • White glue
  • Double-sided padded tape

How to make it:

Step 1: Card Cutouts

  1. Cut out a 5 1/2"x 11" rectangle shape on solid colored cardstock and fold in half.
  2. Cut out one  4" x 4" square on white cardstock.
  3. Cut out two 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" squares - one on solid colored cardstock and one on design cardstock.

Step 2: Snowflake (A)

  1. Cut four pieces of wire, two 6" long pieces of wire, and two 5" long pieces of wire.
  2. Cut four, 2-1/2" long pieces of pipe cleaner and four 2" long pieces of pipe cleaner.
  3. Criss-cross two of the 6" pieces of wire to create an X.
  4. Fasten the X by weaving wool around and between wire.
  5. Wrap wool tightly around wire up to 1/2” in length, starting with one wire at a time and from center of snowflake.
  6. Twist a 2-1/2" long piece of pipe cleaner around wire so that 1 ¼" is on either side, in a "V" shape.
  7. Wrap wool tightly around pipe cleaner, cut excess and glue in place.
  8. Slide a large pearl on the wire, snuggly by the "V" shaped pipe cleaner and glue in place.
  9. Wrap more wool around wire.
  10. Twist a 2" long piece of pipe cleaner around the 2 ½" pipe cleaner so that there is 1" is on either side, in a "V" shape, then continue to wrap wool around pipe cleaner.
  11. Cut wool and glue wool in place.
  12. Slide a small pearl on the wire, snuggly against the smaller "V".
  13. Wrap the remaining tip of wire with wool, cut excess and glue in place.
  14. Repeat for three remaining wires.

Step 3:  Snowflake (B)

  1. Criss-cross two 5" long pieces of wire to create another X.
  2. Fasten the X by weaving wool around and between wire.
  3. Place X behind snowflake (A), kitty-corner, and wrap the Xs together with wool.
  4. Wrap wool tightly around wire up to 1/2” in length, starting with one wire at a time and from center of snowflake.
  5. Slide medium sized pearl on wire and glue in place.
  6. Wrap the remaining wire with wool leaving 1/4" of wire.
  7. Slide small pearl on tip of wire and glue in place.
  8. Glue a large pearl in center of snowflake.
  9. Repeat for the three remaining wires.

Step 4: Putting Together the Card

  1. Place double-sided padded tape on back of  4" x 4" white square.
  2. Turn square to create a diamond shape and place on top center of card.
  3. Place double-sided padded tape on back of 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" solid colored square.
  4. Place square in directly over the white diamond.
  5. Place double-sided padded tape on remaining square of design paper.
  6. Turn square to create a diamond shape and place on top of center of square.
  7. Glue snowflake on center of card.

Tips:

  • Subtitute wool for a design paper snowflake cutout.
  • Substitute pearls for beads or diamonds.
